Can you believe summer break is already coming to a close, and we’re in full back to school shopping mode already? The sales are everywhere, enticing you to buy clothes, backpacks, school supplies, and lunch boxes. But while you’re out shopping for the necessities, don’t forget one of the most important things your kids need throughout the day… water!

Kids’ bodies have a higher water content than an adult, but they lose a lot of water during the day with school activities and exercise. That’s why it’s important for them to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and healthy. Studies show kids that drink water through the day are more focused and increase their ability to learn. So, at the top of your back to school shopping list should be a great water bottle that they’ll love using.

When you’re shopping for a water bottle, don’t grab the first bottle with a cute design. Your child may love it, but will you? Be sure to look at the following important criteria that I look for in my water bottles:

EASY TO CLEAN: We parents have enough to do every day. Let’s not add a “hand-wash only” item to our busy list. A lot of water bottles are not dishwasher safe, and some have multiple parts to take apart and clean. Our bottle picks are easy and top-rack dishwasher safe.

LEAK PROOF: No child wants to open their backpack to find the bottom soaked through from a leaky bottle. Or worse, their lunch soggy and ruined. Yuck!

SAFE: Everyone, parent or not, should be passionate about avoiding plastic products that contain chemicals that could cause cancer. We’ve been hearing it for years. BPA-free plastic has become a normal and necessary stamp of approval to see before we purchase. The other safe options are using water bottles made of stainless steel or glass. Glass may not be practical (or safe) for your kids to carry, so our 6 water bottles are all either BPA-free or stainless steel.

  • A suggestion to teach your kids: keep your plastic water bottles out of direct sunlight or in prolonged heat. Most plastics, including BPA-free, when exposed to ultraviolet light (sunlight) or prolonged high temperatures, may leak chemicals that have estrogenic effects.

  1. Asobu Juicy Drink Box Water Bottles
Do your kids love juice boxes? Juice boxes go in millions of school lunches every year. Let’s just say I should have taken stock in Juicy Juice 18 years ago. How smart was Asobu to create a reusable drink box that can be filled with water or any drink over and over again? It’s actually the size and style of a juice box, so at only 10 oz., it’s a bit small. But for the younger kids, it’s perfect in their lunch. Plus, they say it’s 100% BPA free, dishwasher safe, freezable, scratch resistant, and “virtually indestructible”.

I have to add in this great water bottle from Contigo as a bonus. Their Autoseal Trekker kids bottle comes in fun colors, and they’re super easy for kids ages 3 and up to use. They have a large one-touch push button with an Autoseal lid that automatically seals between drinks for leak-proof no mess drinking. Plus, they are BPA free, dishwasher safe, and have lifetime warranty.

Okay, so there are my 5 best finds for awesome, safe, and user-friendly water bottles for back to school. But finding the perfect water bottle might just be the easy part. Now getting them to drink 2-3 bottles during the day, that’s the hard part.

A fun way to remind them to drink and refill their bottle is to put 2 or 3 colored elastic/rubber bands around the bottle. Each time they finish and go to refill their bottle, they take a rubber band off. The goal is to come home with an empty water bottle with no rubber bands still on it.

What are your kids’ favorite water bottles and why do they work well? Let me know in the comments below!

Water often for health and happiness. xx

Written by Dayna

After years of chronic health problems with migraines and IBS, I began to realize drinking more water helped with many of my problems. When my mom developed Alzheimer's and osteoporosis, I decided to make a lifestyle change so that I didn't have the same future. Change isn't easy, but I hope that we can prevent chronic illness and disease by living a healthier life.

  1. I find it amazing how much more my kids drink water since I bought them nice bottles. I never had a clue that the fancy bottles would get them drinking it until I got them a few months back. I would have done it a lot sooner if I’d known!

    • Yep, so true Holly! My kids are teens and for some reason have always preferred to drink water out of a bottle. Even when we have filtered water, they still want to put it into a bottle instead of a glass. I find that so odd, but play along so that they’ll drink more. We do what we must LOL. Thanks again for sharing. xx

  2. These are great. We currently use the clean canteen. It may be spelled with “k”s? I will be checking out the bottles on your list. They look fabulous!!!

    • Awesome Susan! I’ll check out the Klean canteen and maybe add them to my shop for water bottles. Thanks for the suggestion! xx

    • You’re very welcome Debbie. It’s the simple things that we don’t always think of that work the best. Hope it helps to keep them motivated to drink their water!

  3. Thanks Dayna. I never know what water bottle I should buy for my kid’s bags. I feel like every year they have soaked backpacks even when these bottles say leak-proof. It is nice to have a list of Mommy approved brands to refer to. I love the Green Steel Kids. I think I’ll buy that one!

    • So happy you found the article helpful Crystal! I totally had that wet backpack problem with my kids with certain bottles. They’re papers would be a mess. Isn’t the Greens Steel Kids bottle adorable? Wish they had this years ago! Have fun shopping! Dayna xx

  4. Hi Dayna! Thanks for this helpful post! Having a great water bottle definitely helps get in those daily ounces! I am wondering if you have any suggestions for water bottles with straws? Or separate straws that you can insert in these? I find I drink sooo much more water when I have a straw. Any thoughts appreciated 🙂

    • Hi Heather! Thanks for the suggestion to get some great bottles with straws on my site! I’ve found some really great tumbler cups that have straws and you can find them in my Shop With Me section right now. I totally agree that drinking water is easier when I have a bottle or a straw in front of me. Thanks again! Dayna xx
