What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? You probably go straight for your first cup of coffee. We think our body needs coffee because that’s what we’re craving. But our body is truly calling out for water, because we wake up dehydrated. So, it’s time to start a new killer morning habit!

Your goal should be to drink (2) – 16 oz glasses of cool water when you wake up, but let’s start with baby steps. Remember, it’s okay not to be perfect with change.
Right now you’re saying to yourself, “There is NO way I’m giving up my coffee in the morning!”
I totally get you. I don’t make big changes without BIG reasons why. Give me the facts on why I should grab that plain glass of water over my delicious mocha cappuccino. (I still have my morning cup of coffee or green tea after I finish my water.)
Your body is dehydrated when you wake up
You just woke up from an 8-hour sleep (hopefully), and your body has been without fluids all night. You also perspire when you sleep, causing you to lose more water. We are made up of more than 60% water, and the first thing our body will need is to replace it. Plus, coffee and its caffeine are a diuretic that will cause you to pee out more precious water. Replace the water.
Water fires up your metabolism for the day
Water revs up your metabolism naturally. A recent study in Germany showed that drinking cool water when you wake up will boost your metabolism an average of 24% during that first 90 minutes. Water gives you natural energy throughout your day when you stay hydrated, without a caffeine stimulant. Drink the water.
Water gets your digestive system going and flushes out toxins
If you want your intestines and kidneys to do what they were made for, they need water. You body needs to rid itself of the waste you take in every day. We can only do this if we (gross alert) poop and pee. To keep that system working properly, we need to keep our body fully hydrated so it can flush out the toxins. Getting rid of toxins will help keep your body out of a state of inflammation, which can cause chronic illness, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
You will curb your cravings and eat less
Drinking a large glass of water when you wake up and before every meal, will help you feel full and eat less. This simple zero calorie substance will fill you up and help avoid snacking. Fill your stomach with healthy water, not useless calories.
Pump up your brain for the day ahead
This one is so important! Your brain is made up of about 73% water. When you sleep, you lose a lot of that water that your brain needs to work at its best. If you start your day with only coffee, you’re only getting a stimulant and a diuretic. This doesn’t help our brain work at its best. If the brain is dehydrated, it causes fatigue, lack of focus, migraines, and depression. When our brain is in a constant state of dehydration, it can also contribute to dementia and Alzheimer’s.
There are so many great reasons to start your day with water! Try keeping a stainless steel water bottle by your bed so it’s ready to drink when you wake up. Your water will still be cool and refreshing.
